Soccer Ball Finished!

I finished up the soccer ball (started here) last night.  It was sewn by machine, mostly, except for the last pentagon to close it up.

On the whole, I’m happy with it, and it didn’t take long (maybe 2 hours of sewing altogether).   It’s pretty big for a toy, but it might make a great throw pillow for a soccer fan.

However, either I didn’t plan it well enough so that the pieces never touched a piece in its own print.  Toward the end, it got very mucked up in that sense.

Maybe next time I can use this chart to plan out the placement of the colors/prints so they don’t touch.

Also, when I make the next one, I want to back each piece of quilting cotton with felt, sewn 1/4 inch inside the piece-to-piece seam allowance.  I think this will give the ball more of a form and make it less lumpy and uneven, but if the felt is not part of the piecing, then the meeting points of three shapes will not be bulky.  I’ll report back, of course.

    Hi Karen

congrats on you soccer ball. I made one too a while ago and figuring out which colours go where took some headscratching! In the end I went out and bought a proper ball and stuck the colours on there to make sure I don’t have any of the same next to each other. I hand pieced so it took more than 2 hours! You can see the result here: http://sonenskadu.blogspot.com/2010/03/soccer-ball-update.html. I am now busy crocheting the next ball – again not a two hour job!
